Vertical Storage Racks

A Vertical Storage Rack is perfect for distribution and manufacturing facilities. This unit is designed to organize and minimize floor space of long awkward pieces of material. For best use, it is recommended the unit be placed up against a wall for vertical or horizontal storage. Storage bays come in many configurations to best fit the needs of the user. Unit is powder-coated blue for baked in toughness and to minimize abrasions during use.

Vertical storage racks offer a space-saving and efficient solution for storing long items like timber, pipes, and other bulky materials. Available in various sizes, these racks allow you to start with a “starter” bay and easily expand by adding as many “add-on bays” as your storage needs grow. This modular design provides flexibility and scalability, making it ideal for warehouses, workshops, and industrial settings where maximising floor space is essential. Durable and sturdy, vertical storage racks keep your materials organised, accessible, and safely stored, helping to improve workflow and maintain a tidy, professional environment.

Vertical Storage Racks are specifically designed to accommodate a wide range of long items, including steel, timber, plastic, and more. Their sturdy construction ensures safe and secure storage, preventing damage and making it easy to organise bulky materials. Ideal for industrial, warehouse, and workshop environments, these racks maximise vertical space, freeing up valuable floor area for other operations. Their modular design allows you to customise your storage setup to fit your exact needs, providing flexibility as your inventory grows. With Vertical Storage Racks, you gain a practical, efficient solution that keeps long materials accessible, organised, and protected.

Our Racking Frequently Asked Questions

Pallet racking and Longspan Shelving are understated but essential components of an efficient warehouse. Your goods are often transported, stored, moved, protected or even prepared using industrial equipment which also requires special attention.

Before purchasing racking or shelving, it is important to ask yourself a few questions so you can identify your specific needs and thus choose the most suitable container for what you want to use it for.

What is Pallet Racking?

Pallet racking is a system of warehouse storage that uses racks to organize and store goods on pallets, allowing for efficient use of space and easy access. It's a material handling storage system designed to store goods on pallets, creating a unit load for storage and transport. This system enables the stacking of pallets vertically and horizontally, maximising storage capacity and facilitating inventory
management.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

  • Pallets: These are horizontal platforms, often made of wood or
plastic, that support goods for storage and transport.
  • Racks: These are metal structures, usually with multiple levels,
    that hold the pallets.
  • Forklifts: Forklifts are typically used to move pallets on and off the
racking system, allowing for efficient loading and unloading.
  • Vertical Storage: Pallet racking allows for vertical storage, maximizing
storage capacity by utilizing the height of the warehouse.
  • Access: Many pallet racking systems allow for direct access to each
    pallet, making inventory management easier.
  • Types: There are various types of pallet racking, each with its own
advantages and disadvantages, such as selective, drive-in, and mobile
    racking.
  • Benefits: Pallet racking helps businesses:
    - Maximize storage space.
    - Organize inventory.
    - Improve warehouse efficiency.
    - Facilitate the movement of goods.

What is Longspan Racking?

Longspan racking is a heavy-duty shelving system designed for storing long,
bulky items in warehouses, industrial environments, and storerooms. It
combines the strength of pallet racking with the flexibility of shelving,
offering a versatile storage solution for medium to heavy-duty
applications. Longspan racking is known for its durability, ease of
assembly, and ability to be adapted to various storage needs. Longspan
racking is used to handball items on rather than pallet racking which normally
would use a forklift.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

  • Heavy-Duty Storage: Longspan racking is designed to handle heavier and bulkier
items that might not be suitable for standard shelving units.
  • Versatile Application: It's commonly used in warehouses, distribution centers,
factories, and stockrooms, and is suitable for hand-loaded applications.
  • Flexibility: Longspan racking can be easily adapted to different sizes
and load capacities, making it suitable for a wide range of items.
  • Modular Design: It typically consists of frames, beams, and decking (often
chipboard), allowing for customization and expansion.
  • Easy Assembly: Longspan racking is designed to be relatively simple to
assemble, often using a boltless system.
  • Load Capacity: Depending on the specific system and components, longspan
racking can handle loads ranging from a few hundred kilograms to over a
    thousand kilograms per shelf level.
  • Components: Longspan racking systems can include starter bays
(standalone units) and add-on bays (for extending existing runs).

What should you consider when choosing industrial racking?

Do you need industrial racking for your new business, to extend your storage areas or to renew your facilities? It is essential to start by assessing your needs.

What issues are at stake in the choice of storage racking?

The choices you make when it comes to equipping your industrial warehouse have an impact on the ‘Well-working’ of your employees and on the productivity of the company. Industrial storage solutions must also comply with European regulations.

Appropriate layout for well-being at the workplace.

Appropriate racking and shelving contribute to a better working environment for professionals. In addition to optimising storage and workspaces, they facilitate stock management and handling in warehouses. Racking is therefore a source of ‘Well-working’ in the warehouse. ‘Well-working’ is a concept that brings together the notions of personal development and the smooth operation of the company.

What is the difference between pallet racking and longspan shelving?

Racking systems are typically used for heavier items and bulk storage, utilizing vertical space, while shelving is used for lighter, more accessible items.

What does top beam size mean in pallet racking?

Top beam size is referred to as the distance of top of the beam. This can be measured by calculating the distance from front to back which is usually 40mm or 50mm.

What are the important characteristics of the pallet?

Firstly, let’s assume that you’re storing good quality pallets that conform with the European specifications. Unlike shelving, pallet racking has no shelf deck, so pallets are simply supported on a pair of horizontal beams. These beams are only 40mm, or 50mm, across the top surface so the pallet itself is doing a lot of work. It must be strong enough to take the load it’s carrying. Some pallets, transit pallets for example, are just not suitable for racking on a pair of beams. There may well be easy solutions, like pallet support bars, timber decking or mesh decking, but you’ll need specialist advice for these options. For conventional good quality pallets, you need to know: the width, the depth, the height, and the weight.

Do I need racking protection barriers and protector guards?

Racking protection barriers and protector guards are normally used with pallet racking. These protectors offer protection from accidental damage to the pallet racking which could be fatal if the racking collapses. The protection barriers are normally used at the end of the racking and also at the face of the racking upright. These are made of steel and are usually 3mm thick and can withstand heavy force inevitably saving any damage to the racking which would otherwise need to be replaced thus saving money and also lives.

Do the Racking units come prebuilt?

All of our Longspan products will arrive to you in component form to reduce delivery costs, therefore self-assembly will be required.

All of our Pallet racking will have the frames assembled unless requested otherwise.

Our Pallet racking will be delivered on a pallet/s and will need a forklift truck on the customers end.

Do the units come with build instructions?

Our longspan products should arrive to you with assembly instructions within the parcel. If you cannot locate your instructions give us a call and we will be more than happy to send them to you again or alternatively you find them here.

Can we collect our order?

Yes, collections can be made 24-48 hours after the order is placed but this is subject to the size of the order. Please call our customer services team for advice.

What is the lead time for racking/shelving?

Generally 1-3 days on most orders.

Are all pallet racking beams and frames compatible?

No, you need to have the same manufacturer and type of frames and beams for safe fitting. Contact us sales@ukpalletracking.co.uk if you are not sure or need a specific system which we do normally stock.

What type of racking to I need, pallet racking or Longspan?

For any application that needs to store pallets or has mechanical handing then we would advise you use pallet racking. Any hand loaded shelving with a max shelf load of 400kgs we would recommend longspan.

Does our racking come with warranty?

Our racking and shelving are manufactured in the European Union and have 5 years warranty. Please note this does not cover damage caused by the customer.

How many levels can I have in longspan bays?

You need to have a minimum of 2 levels for stability. After that you can have as many as you require (or will fit) as long as the weight load does not exceed the frame loads.

Can I come to your warehouse to view the racking/shelving?

Yes, this can be arranged. We would welcome you to our
offices and warehouse to make sure you have the correct system and size.

What storage standards must be respected?

If you handle foodstuffs or chemicals, be careful to comply with the regulations, especially in the European market:

  • The food standard and/or HACCP1 system for food products;
  • ESD/Anti-static certification (EN 61340-5) for electronic products;
  • EUR-EPAL Pallet certification for products that are compatible with European standard pallets.

Think Lean Management. The right industrial equipment for your business saves time and space. Don’t overlook the colour and complementary accessories (labels, lids, dividers, etc.). Every detail counts.

Can I collect from your warehouse?

Yes we are open from 8:00am — 5pm Mon-Fri for collections. We have the facility to load small vans and up to 40 foot curtain sided trailers.

What depth pallet racking do I need for my pallets?

If you have standard UK pallets 1200mm x 1000mm stored 1000mm deep you would require a 2700mm wide beam x 900mm deep frame.

If it is stored 1200mm deep then you would require either a 2300mm or 3300mm wide beam x 1100mm deep frame.

If you have euro pallets 1200mm x 800mm you would store them on a 2700mm wide beam x 1100mm deep frame.

Do you supply forklift trucks?

Forklift trucks are a very important item for the warehouse and it is important that you have the correct one. For this reason we do not specify or sell forklift trucks but work closely with a couple of suppliers and would gladly recommend them and their services.
